Cedar's Guardians

The so-called "Cedar's Guardians" Party has been resurrected, with this exact slogan in hand: “Each Lebanese should kill one Palestinian”. Indeed, today, in the post-war period, at the end of 2005, and without the slightest official care, a party is calling for the revival of “the crime era”, adopting a real xenophobic approach.

True, we are the freedom-of-speech country, or so they say. True, we are entitled to express our opinions, and like/dislike certain political movements and parties. True, we blame each and every foreign nation for destroying our country (though we sometimes forget we weren’t that innocent ourselves). I’m just, somehow, concerned about the way fanatism is still showing its ugly face in this place. And I can't figure out a twisted way to look at it from a different perspective.

Ideally, moderate compromise would take place at the personal level in the hearts and minds of each and every one of us.
Lacking that, the second best situation is to have extreme viewpoints of both sides of the spectrum engaged together, creating an outcome of moderation on the grand level. In that sense, two wrongs do make a right... kind of.

The fearful thing is that the mindset of a portion of the Lebanese society is still based on the concept of blood and violence... the concept of terrorizing the opposition and silencing the criticism. Hopefully this generation will be able to avoid the pitfalls of the past.
