the attack itself occurred near midnight, while reports of an explosion and the structure's collapse were only received at around 8:30 A.M.
Why did the building collapse?
Hillal,
A few things to say. First and foremost, the deaths in Qana are a horror, a tragedy, and leave me heartsick. All of us need to forget for a second the "who's to blame" and "who's winning or losing" and just take a minute to recognize the enormity of the loss. Unless you can do that - and yes, n1x, I'm talking to you - your words are worthless, no matter haw true or false they are.
But after taking that moment, and thinking about what happened, I can say with absolute moral clarity and certainty that while an Israeli pilot fired the missile, it was Hezbollah who killed those people.
The IDF has released a video of Hezbollah firing rockets from that building before it was attacked. Now I ask you, was there any way for that pilot to know, when he fired the missile, that the building was sheltering civillians? Of course not; from several thousand feet up, all the pilot knew was he was hitting a building that rockets were fired from.
Contrast that with Hezbollah. Was there any way that they could *not* have known, when they chose that building as a platform to launch attacks, that there were civillians inside? Women and children? Of course not - they were there, on the ground, they knew exactly who was in that building. And was there any way that they could not have known that by choosing the building as a platform to launch attacks they were painting a bulls eye on it for the IDF? Again, of course not.
Hezbollah knew exactly what it was doing when it chose that building. I'll say it again - an Israeli missile hit the building, but Hezbollah killed the people inside.

You're a pathetic supremacist peyotee. takes a lot of courage to run your mouth from behind a keyboard, but what has your vaunted army accomplished? A few weeks of insane violence, killing women and children from a thousand feet away, running with your tails between your legs from Bint Jbeil, and HA still stands and will stand when the dust settles, and you would know that if you had a brain. Take your hasbara elsewhere. No one is buying it, and a generation of Americans are turning against you. You'll lose your subsidies in 10-20 years, you can count on that. Nice going.
The Israeli action is like killing the hostages after the kidnappers have fled.
The IDF know that these rocket launch sites are highly mobile and the moment it fires the Hizbollah leave also. So why target the place it came from? What is the IDF trying to achieve?
If they want the a reputation for being ignorant killers of the innocent because they can't find the guilty they are doing a good job.
Does this win them approval in Israel?
If so, then there is no hope. This bloody and totally unnecesary war will go on into perpetuity until the ringmasters get tired of it and move on to somewhere else.
If it is going to stop then it HAS to be the Israelis who stop it.

Hilal - I think I've been respectful, and I've certainly always prefaced my comments with my grief over the loss of life, which is both sincere and deep.
But if you don't want political comments, then that should be aimed equally at those who say "Israel's fault" as at those who say "Hezbollah's fault". If that's what you want to do, I'll respect that. But don't expect me to listen to the rising tide of hatred and not do what I can to try to douse those flames with facts.

BTW, most of the deaths in Iraq are caused by Iraqis - Sunni killing Shia, Shia killing Sunni. Where is your outrage over that?
Simple true or false - Hezbollah fired rockets from Qana, and used that building?
If the answer is true, then your anger should be directed at Hezbollah for putting those people in danger, not at the Israelis who had NO WAY OF KNOWING about the people inside.
Unless you think that the answer is false, or that Israel had some way of knowing about the people inside, how in the world can you blame them for firing at that building?
The loss of life is horrible, but the only way to end this is to use your brain, to THINK instead of reacting on emotional instinct.

I think that your reasoning is a little superficial.
Now, if the IDF not only had no way of knowing whether there were people inside that building but also knew (as did the rest of the world), that civilians were unable to flee those areas because of the very grave risk of Israeli air attacks, then there is a reasonable assumption that there may well be people sheltering inside it.
Plus, Hezbollah are known to use the civilian population as a shield.
Plus, Hezbollah know that the moment there is a rocket attack the Israelis will locate and target that firing point, so they are not going to hang around they are going to get the hell out of there.
So, the IDF knows, or can make reasonably informed judgements, that:
1. there are likely to be civilians in the area from which a missile was fired;
2. there is every likelihood that there will be no Hezbollah in that location;
3. destroying that building will serve no military purpose.
To the horrified onlooker this looks very much like each side competing to be the worst bully on the block. Hezbollah purposely putting defenceless civilians in harm's way and the Israelis purposely killing them to prove they don't care.

Warning Strong Pictures
These are the pictures you will see, only, in Lebanese newspapers tomorrow. yes, too strong & maybe non-postable for ethical reasons, but what is going on in Lebanon has gone beyond any ethics in any worldwide dictionary. This is what the Israeli raids are doing to my country, to my people. This is what they will keep on doing, under the pretext of "self-defense". Those are the terrorists who scared Ehud Olmert. A moment of silence, a prayer and a call for all those who care still about humanity to wake up!!
