Israel and 'Moral Equivalence'

by Justin Raimondo.

"...One has to wonder, however, what it is they’re smoking if they really think anyone believes their overly elaborate obfuscations. Like a squid ejecting a cloud of ink, the Israeli propaganda machine is emitting all sorts of alternate scenarios, replete with maps, aerial photos, and video, and they dispatched their Internet army to spread the rationalizations far and wide. All to cover up a simple, irrefutable fact: it was Israeli warplanes, and not Hezbollah, that slaughtered 56 people, more than half of them young children, and the rest women and old folks.

IDF commanders and the politicians who supposedly control them don’t even have the courage of their own viciousness. After all, they have an easy out in this pronouncement of the Yesha Rabbinical Council:

"According to Jewish law, during a time of battle and war, there is no such term as 'innocents' of the enemy. All of the discussions on Christian morality are weakening the spirit of the army and the nation and are costing us in the blood of our soldiers and civilians."

These aren’t fringe characters, but fairly representative of Israeli religious opinion. Pat Buchanan complains:

"If Israel is not in violation of the principle of proportionality, by which Christians are to judge the conduct of a just war, what can that term mean? There are 600 civilian dead in Lebanon, 19 in Israel, a ratio of 30-1, though Hezbollah is firing unguided rockets, while Israel is using precision-guided munitions."...

I find it mind-boggling that someone would suggest Israel fight a war in a proportional way. It seems like a guaranteed way to never win the war, and have it continue intermittently as it has for decades.

Don't the Lebanese people want permanent peace and freedom? The only way that can happen is when Israel finishes beating the snot out of Hezbollah, The Lebanese people rise up and demand that whatever's left of Hezbollah get the hell out of Lebanon.

Barring that, Lebanon and Israel will be going through this horror again in 5 years or so. Iran and Syria, get your hands off of the Lebanese people!

Mirvat,

Moral equivalence must consider this:

Hizballah has been murdering Israeli citizens since Israel pulled out of southern Lebanon. It was their miltary adventurism that brought Israeli rockets and bombs on top the Lebanese.

Hizballah has promised to assassinate Lebanese politicians that oppose them after the fight with Israel stops.

HA is wholly owned by the Syrian intelligence machine (and I believe was ordered by Syria to kill and abduct the Israeli soldiers). There is NOTHING patriotic for a Lebanese to not HELP Israel kill as many HA members as possible in Lebanon.

Whatever happens, Israel will eventually leave Lebanon. Can the same be said of if The Party of God?

I have no sympathy for Hezbollah cheerleader J. Raimondo. Apologists like him show to the world Hezbollah's nice face. In Raimondo's eyes those people who have the arrogance of calling themselves the 'party of God' are supposed to be the Arab version of the French resistance and Nasrallah a Shia version of Che guevarra.

But in reality, Hezbollah has another face, a bearded face. It is a party involved in act of terrorism against US marines and Jewish targets in South America. It is a party that send its thugs beat Christian dwellers after a TV show mocked its 'sayyed', God's representative on Earth. It is a party that opposed Syria's withdrawal last year, despite the fact that there are thousands of Lebanese prisonners in Syria being treated worse than Khiam's prisonners, despite the fact that they know what the Syrians did to the Lebanese during the last decades. It is a party that besiege Christian and Druze villages in the south, abuse their population, fire its Katiusha behind churches in an obvious attempt to improve the 'score' of civilian casualties. It is a party that wants to impose its fanatical religious system on others. It is a party that has been trying to stop the international inquiry and the interational tribunal regarding Hariri's death. It is a party that hides its rockets in civilian buildings and then cry crocodile tears over the death of children. It is a party funded by Iran and Syria in order to block the Lebanese transition to democracy and that has done everything to block the reforms during the last 14 months. For all of these reasons, Hezbollah deserve to die one hundred times.

So no, I have no sympathy for people like Justin Raimondo, who try to sell a wrong image of Hezbollah. I regard as a mortal enemy anybody who supports or vote for Hezbollah, and I shall not care for them.

imad, did you see the coverage for cuba? i had to come accross it while waiting for news about lebanon on CNN. the second they heard castro is ill, they presented an agenda to "help cuba reach democracy" millions of dollars of course and another occupation, they even said cuba used to be part of the USA.. the plan for the "new cuba" had a budget for health reform.. even the commentator on CNN couldn't swallow this one.. he's like so if an american wants health insurance, he should go to cuba.

just another example of the arrogance.

blogagog, any one with brains knows that israel has planned this war a long time.
fine let's put it in simple terms for you:
israel destroys lebanon to get rid of HA because they feel threatened= lebanon keeps HA because we feel threatened, why because there is a country to our south that keeps bombing the hell out of us..
now i'm sure you're way too smart to argue, but HA are terrorists!! you're better than that, you can read and write can't you?

If the IDF was acting according to this, then why are they announcing their strikes ahead of time to try to get civilians out of the line of fire?

:( If you truly believe that Israel planned to start a war by having Hezbollah kidnap some Israeli soldiers, then the outlook for Lebanon is truly bleak. The hatred of Israel must be very great indeed to be able to look past facts and blame Israel for starting this. Or to say Israel started this by occupying some Syrian farmland, as they have since 1967. Is Israel also to blame for Palestinians tunneling into Israel, killing some people and kidnapping a soldier? If your answer is yes, then this war will go on forever.

I have no doubt that Israel had plans for how to react to Iran's lapdogs attacking them. I also have no doubt that Iran and Hezbollah had a plan for attacking Israel. In fact, we are seeing both of those plans play out. But Israel didn't start it. Hezbollah did.

I'm amazed that you happily allow Iran and Syria to order Hezbollah to aid in the destruction of Lebanon, all the while decrying 'so called democracy' in your words. I pray that you come to understand the damage Iran's Hezbollah is doing to you, your country, and Israel.

ahuva, i seem to see the sirens on your side warning people, HA warn you people.
in our town, they warn then when people try to run away, they bomb their cars. i have family in baalbek who were scared to death yesterday but couldn't get out of there because of all "the accidents" that have been hitting anything that moves! so many families died in their cars, civil cars.

blogagog, i tried, seems you are beyond help.. and rest assured the hate will go on forever thanks to what you did now. this war has been planned since 2000 and there's alot of proof for that that's obviously beyond you.

Loubnani,

you said: This is bullshit ! where are your proofs [that Hizballah has been murdering Israeli citizens since Israel pulled out of southern Lebanon]?

No it is not b.s. And I shall offer proof for all the good it will do, because because it is YOU that dispense the b.s. in that you don't CARE that HA has done these things.

http://www.globalsecurity.org/military/world/para/hizballah.htm

"On Saturday morning, 7 October 2000 [less than five months after Israel pulled out of S.L.], an armed and frenzied mob, numbering in the hundreds, attacked the border fence from Lebanese territory, immediately followed by heavy shelling of Israeli border positions by Hizballah terrorist elements from Lebanese territory, using explosives, rocket-propelled grenades, Sager missiles and border shells. During the course of this aggression, three Israeli soldiers were kidnapped by a Hizballah unit which had entered Israeli territory for this purpose.

The organization operates against Israel in four main ways:

*Bringing terrorists and collaborators through the border crossings using foreign documents

*Setting up a terrorist organization inside Israel and in Judea, Samaria and the Gaza Strip

*Cross-border operations - smuggling weapons and terrorists

*Financial support for Palestinian organizations and groups.

Since 2003 it has been possible to see a trend of increasing cooperation between Hizballah in Lebanon and operational entities among the other Palestinian terrorist organizations, with the accent on Tanzim, Islamic Jihad, Hamas and the Popular Front. This cooperation is particularly evident between Hizballah and the Tanzim and in practice, in recent months Hizballah has served as a kind of "external command" for most of the Tanzim organizations in the territories.

Mirvat, are you saying that the IDF isn't dropping leaflets telling people that they're planning on hitting their town, so they need to get out?

The IDF isn't trying to get people into their cars so they can play target-practice. No one wants civilians to get hurt. (Well, I heard that Hizbullah does, but I find it hard to believe that they're really that evil.) Even if you don't believe that the IDF doesn't want to harm civilians, surely you don't think they're stupid enough to actually WANT the PR nightmare that comes along with pictures of dead children?

No one wants more death. Israelis just want the missiles to stop and their soldiers back. They just want Hizbullah to leave them alone and think that this is the only way to get that to happen. I don't know if it's the right thing to do or not. I just know that there are people living in fear in bomb shelters on both sides of the border. There are people fleeing the fighting on both sides. There are unarmed civilians dying on both sides.

Who is saying that the IDF is intentionally targeting civilian cars anyway? Hizbullah?

Also.. did Hizbullah arm overnight? Surely they've also been planning for this for a long time.

Mirvat, (also any want to be dictators and there followers=)

I was thinking why does it matter about Cuba to you. I was just going to let it go.

Then I remembered Lebanon is our friend. It is possible with all the news you have not heard what is going on in the Americas. “The big picture”

(Excuse my sarcasm, I am trying to be light hearted, about some very serious matters.=)

I do not think the Cuba situation is so much arrogance honestly, as it is in our National and International Interest, specifically our "Security”.

We have tens of thousands of Cuban Americans living all over Florida specifically a large population living in Miami; most of them American voters!

Have you seen Miami?

It’s beautiful, people there are great, loving and it’s referred to as little Havana.

I noticed into today’s paper droves of Cubans waving flags, having a parade. Well, some say this is cruel.

I wonder how they would see it if it were there own families they had to leave behind or witness being executed or jailed for speaking out against Castro's governing body.

We have had generations of Cubans since before Kennedy that have been fighting for Cuba's freedom.

Btw, People do not get in boats and flee across an ocean from a country unless there is something really wrong with it.

That is most likely why you do not see Americans fleeing to Canada or Mexico in droves.

I imagine it may have something to do with Castro not allowing them free speech and the pursuit of happiness.

Many have the same story, fathers packing them up in the middle of the night, fleeing under the cover of darkness to make shift rafts and boats. To travel an open sea hoping to get to our American shore. A free people do not do that.

So,do not be surprised if in the coming days you also see in the news Cubans in Miami doing the dance of joy if Castro dies.

Cuba is also in the national interest of our Politicians to listen to the Cuban Americans otherwise they will not have there cushy jobs in Washington reping fla. =)

It’s actually in Lebanon’s and America’s interest to have a free Cuba.

Why?

Well lets play connect the dictators friends
”the up and coming"
for this example we will leave Africa out and Asia too and so to be added Europe's Putin =).

If you have been keeping track of your international politics this is an easy one.

While your war is happening.

We"America" have to be aware.

To the real threats to America.

I am not referring to mad Lebanese who just need to vent.
btw It’s understandable, I am very sorry for any losses, seriously!!!!

Personally,I have no hate for anyone.

I love the Lebanese people and believe in there future in fact I hope to support rebuilding efforts, friends are there helping in shelters.

I am hopeful Lebanon and its people know America is its friend.

Which in lay part of problem on these posts. We are all our countries not just individuals.

So let’s talk about our countries friendships and those around your neighborhood and mine.
Since you bring us up and call us arrogant because were waiting for a dictator off our shores to die.

You and i have some measure of responability for our governments actions, good bad or ugly.

Governments are their PEOPLE!

We try to deny it in our bloggspere, but like it or not, I am American to you not me the gal I am to my family, friends or co-workers.
As you are Lebanese.

We reflect our countries, our values and its many voices.
As such that is why I get steamed to read anything of bigotry coming across on this blog or damaging words to Israel or Lebanon from America.
I feel almost embarrased, because they represent me to some degree.

I have also come to realize no matter how many nice things I say on these posts, I am just an American imperialist to most.

I have also finally realized, Oh well that sucks not everyone likes us.

I am grateful, I do not lose sleep over it. Americans are just trying in most cases to do our best , be honest, decent people and when necessary stick up for ourselves and our friends.

That in essence is what people fought for during our civil war, civil rights etc so that families can have a quite dinner, go to a ballgame open to all, or just have a cup of Joe where ever we want with who ever we want.

“I know just simple Americans” we do not have the posh history of the ME or the great Eroupean powers..were just babies.. Damn America they say!

Look I admit, we got a sweet deal in the Americas, but we have really learned oceans are not enough to keep us well and safe.

With that in mind I will share my own picture of the current Cuban crisis.
It’s a crisis if we do nothing Miravet!

America is at times polarized by dissenting voices against war but if you ask the average American to go live in Cuba I imagine they would say no, it being 3rd world and has a dictator ruling it.

We tend to love our starbucks. Which did you know is in china...amazing I was there in Bejing..neat.

We also tend to enjoy the malls without guns at the door or bus stops.

We love our freedom; we will not have any knives to our throats.

That is what Castro represents to many Americans.

Do you remember the story of the day Castro put a knife to America’s throat?

That is why we have eyes on Castro, I imagine we do not want to have the likes of a Hugo Chavez, the "Che" want to be or any other up and coming dictator decide to even a score and start shooting missiles from Cuba.

A Democratic Cuba is good for the Americas.

My father is an immigrant he has told my brothers and I this story my whole life about the tyrant who tried to stare down Kennedy. The man who was put in his rightful box.

Friend, America is not arrogant about Cuba!!

Cubas “Castro” thought years ago to move Russian made missiles into firing range of America, that history is still fresh in some Americans minds most say of Castro good riddens!

WE tend to shide anyone pointing anything of destruction at us.

We also do not like being told, what to wear, what to read, what to believe. That is not arrogance that is get your butt off the couch and march, organize and fight for freedom.

It is what my mom’s generation and those before her have left us.

Our freedoms are not free.

We also why we tend to reward and look after those we have relationships with.

That’s why we have boys and girls in arms way with our friends in Asia etc.

Miravet, Cuba is strategically important to my personal freedom.

Right now, Castro’ play pen buddy is HUGO Chavez, Venezuela’s “che” want to be who is putting pressure on our Latin American friends to side with him, bullying them with his threats.

All the while he is building up his own little HEZZBOLAH.

I think he thinks were so busy, with parties and social affairs, Iraq, etc that we do not notice.

I am sure he got this tactic from his best friend the Iranian president who awarded him the highest honor in IRAN, only days ago.

You know IRAN the country that is out to wipe Israel off the map and has Hezzbolah controlling your southern boarder.

Cuba matters to LEBONON because reality Communist "dictators" and countries led by militias do not care for there people or others around them.

America loves our Cubans friends, we just do not like their leader but greatfully he is all boxed up so no worries.

I imagine any country siding with the same style of leadership as Castro can expect a knock on there capitol door from America.
(hint to wack job dictators =)

President Bush while he is not a popular guy he is all we have.

As Americans you cannot imagine the rally for the troops that would take place if the likes of Chavez continues stepping into our business. Putting the sqeeze on our latin friends and going off to have chia tea meetings with Iran.

The guy has a napoleon complex.

While Americans here wine and bemoan like they are suffering under President Bush they would take it and take some more of him just so that we will never have a 911 again.

Imagine that was one day, your living in it all this time. Isreal has been living it forever.

Americans won’t have that not being arrogant but being honest.

Why do you think what Condi siads matters to IRAN to Sryia?

If it doesn’t it should.

I just a gal, a total pacifist but this stuff is getting ridiculous.
You think Isrealis rallied behind Olmert.
there would ticker take parades in the streets for Bush if we really thought that Iran was going nuclear and were a real threat to your region and our friends.

I do not see France running to drop a bunch dough into your economy, you do not have China offering to send medical supplies.

Where is Russia for Lebanon right now?

(Putin btw, is questionable on a whole bunch of levels giving chavez helicopters and missles but I will not go there)

The Cuban people like the Lebanese people have a door of opportunity.
America can be your bridge, love us or hate us.

Lebanon is our friend; I have been amazed by the Cedar Revolution and what it really stands for!

I do not think the King of Jordon has the economy and growing infrastructure because he loves Israel.

I think he finally realized Isreal is going no-where.

Its there to stay and America will do what it has to stand along side her.

Former President Clinton himself said, Syria, Iran crosses the river he would pick up a gun himself to defend her.

He knows it’s in the vital interest of our people in America that Isreal is safe and Lebonon is free.

I really think, many countries think were hearts and candies.

Even in some circles America is being underestimated by its enemies.

We are not arrogant we are strategic.

I do believe when its done, if Hezbollah is left at is, it will be like a cancer for the Lebanese.

If you allow it to stay in the bowls of your country armed and running its own little nation on your boarders we “America” can offer lebonon nothing.

I myself would not support sending one single tax dollar, I would be on the phone to my reps, senators, and protest in the streets myself.

So surprise a plan for Cuba is in place that’s been since the Missile Crisis of the Kennedy era.

If the reporter sounded stunned by our actions he needs to read more!

I would not be surprised if Henry Kissinger himself helped to draw it up!

Cuba will not be Lebanon; no fringe faction of destabilizing militia will be allowed to exist.

The great news, I am willing to bet it becomes the coolest place to visit in 10 years for vacations.

With all do respect when CASTRO is dead Cuba will come to life!

Which to me is a gift of freedom for cuba. So hopefully maybe some of those marines who have been sitting up watching the lines on watch against Cuba may be able to get a break and come home.

Castro has not forgotten the past, he proved that in his recent surprise visit to a summit of the Latin American countries.

I think he went because he is still pissed we have had an embargo on him since Kennedy was in power and he has plans for a last horah!

(got give some kudos though he has outlasted most, its usually the case for angry old men!)

Well, the embargos were his own fault he should not have ever threatened to shoot missiles at America..

Sound familiar?

He was blessed Kennedy had a cool head and great advisors!

Funny, upon hearing the news of Castro’s illness Chavez sent a note from the road to lift his friend’s spirits.

Chavez the friend of IRAN the friend of Sryia and the beloved Hezzbolah is off visiting dictator friends around the world.

Cuba should matter to a FREE LEBONON, so you say were arrogant…I rather be that then sitting on my hands hoping somone comes to rescue me.

I hope Lebonon gets a bit arrogant then and kicks Hezzbolah and Syria’s bottems off your street corners!!

Castro’s friends are Hezbollah’s friends and it seems your neighborhood is fascinating to them too.

Like it or not our friendships as NATIONS matter.

Are friendships as PEOPLE matter, so I hope you can stop throwing stones soon.

I know Americans love Lebonon.
They would like to help make sure Lebanon is free when Hezbollah is properly disarmed.

Who knows maybe we can all vacation in Cuba in a couple of years. =)
Blessings,
Enriqueta

fakty,
you are a dreamer, its not some plan to take over the middle east.

We would never want it, with all do respect!

Have you seen the way they treat eachother.

You think we want to really deal with it daily?

we do not the paitence for it and it would interfere with Monday night football!!

Here friends, is jack story. Only a week ago a muslim man walks into a Isreali business/group meeting he tells police he is mad at Isreal for it is doing to Lebonon. Here in our country.

He shoots and kills some innocent Isreali's.

Have we heard anymore about it, have the streets run a muck with blood?

No why...

You act like that on the streets of America your butt is in jail one.

Two you get shunned in communties.

3. Community leaders start meeting to calm any unrest(there was none) They remind eachother were a country of tolerance in editorials!

You have Muslim leaders and Isreali leaders talking. chruch leaders throwing there two cents of tolerance.
Reminding us all America, diversity..yada, yada..but wait no yada...we actually do it!!!

thats the America you keep raising a fist at!

you get Zogby and Desherwithz on CNN talking. (last night)

Thats the AMERICA you all keeping snubbing your ME noses at....

I imagine if we didnt love our freedom so much we would look like the ME.
Yes but were selfish, i think somone said arrogant as a nation and we will kick the hate mongoring to the curb.

Even in some of largest cities, maybe its there but we have governemnt representives calming groups etc.
(its not perfect but its better than guns being shot in the air, and beheadings)

Zoby and Dershowitz are talking...several critized me using Dershowitz as an example..well he a face to Isreal and Zogby is a face to Muslims.

I imagine these guys have no great love of eachother, it is possible that they have a genuine respect for the other person.

That maybe yes they do not like what is happening in your neighborhood and they are reaching boiling points but no-one shouted expletives, called there moma out, or put a gun in the others face.

THATS AMERICA, so go ahead, keep calling us names and saying Hezzbolah this and that.

Fine, i keep puting my hand out to you and you keep throwing dirt at my face. This site is a microcom of our countries.

I support Lebonon, and I am finding the tirades on this site ridulous.

This is a spec of society out side the internet. You are showing who Lebonon is in your posts.Hopefully your seeing America in mine, were decent, we give a rats how you are and are willing after hezzbolah is disarmed to come along side you.
Yet you still kick dirt...is this what our diplomats have to go through?
I do not see our simple Texas draw guy with a great deal of paitience I imagine its why he was tired of the bickering and ignored the ME for 5 years. Its the same pot of stew boiling.....at some point American voters will tell our President were done there..its 8000 years and these guys are jacked!

You should be using this site to talk about and share how you are supporting relief efforts.

Come to some middle ground.

Because if you cannot do that on a board that with no-names, faces are seen how will you ever come to some sort of effort to have your streets calm when the shelling stops?

Anyone from lebonon?

Civilizations in China are still trying to figure out there problems, you got some great incite that is new no, me neither.

Isreal has had to watch her back for 8,000 years.

It is most likely she will for the rest of her life.

You want to keep the knife at her throat then I imagine your kids will never enjoy a soccar game in an open field.

Maybe at some point RESPECT might actually become a concept that creates a opporunity for individuals to see your a part of greater society and with it comes great responsebilty not just posting on a blogg.

Your tiresome tiarades about America are old and provide no new incite to me about real change for my country or yours.

with all do respect...

So, Fatky stop feeding garbage and baiting.

yes, we want a stable region...most countries that are free thinking tend to be stable. thats it.

Simple thinking from a simple country...awe shucks...you know our prez is texan...thats it!
