Israel and 'Moral Equivalence'

by Justin Raimondo.

"...One has to wonder, however, what it is they’re smoking if they really think anyone believes their overly elaborate obfuscations. Like a squid ejecting a cloud of ink, the Israeli propaganda machine is emitting all sorts of alternate scenarios, replete with maps, aerial photos, and video, and they dispatched their Internet army to spread the rationalizations far and wide. All to cover up a simple, irrefutable fact: it was Israeli warplanes, and not Hezbollah, that slaughtered 56 people, more than half of them young children, and the rest women and old folks.

IDF commanders and the politicians who supposedly control them don’t even have the courage of their own viciousness. After all, they have an easy out in this pronouncement of the Yesha Rabbinical Council:

"According to Jewish law, during a time of battle and war, there is no such term as 'innocents' of the enemy. All of the discussions on Christian morality are weakening the spirit of the army and the nation and are costing us in the blood of our soldiers and civilians."

These aren’t fringe characters, but fairly representative of Israeli religious opinion. Pat Buchanan complains:

"If Israel is not in violation of the principle of proportionality, by which Christians are to judge the conduct of a just war, what can that term mean? There are 600 civilian dead in Lebanon, 19 in Israel, a ratio of 30-1, though Hezbollah is firing unguided rockets, while Israel is using precision-guided munitions."...

I find it mind-boggling that someone would suggest Israel fight a war in a proportional way. It seems like a guaranteed way to never win the war, and have it continue intermittently as it has for decades.

Don't the Lebanese people want permanent peace and freedom? The only way that can happen is when Israel finishes beating the snot out of Hezbollah, The Lebanese people rise up and demand that whatever's left of Hezbollah get the hell out of Lebanon.

Barring that, Lebanon and Israel will be going through this horror again in 5 years or so. Iran and Syria, get your hands off of the Lebanese people!

Mirvat,

Moral equivalence must consider this:

Hizballah has been murdering Israeli citizens since Israel pulled out of southern Lebanon. It was their miltary adventurism that brought Israeli rockets and bombs on top the Lebanese.

Hizballah has promised to assassinate Lebanese politicians that oppose them after the fight with Israel stops.

HA is wholly owned by the Syrian intelligence machine (and I believe was ordered by Syria to kill and abduct the Israeli soldiers). There is NOTHING patriotic for a Lebanese to not HELP Israel kill as many HA members as possible in Lebanon.

Whatever happens, Israel will eventually leave Lebanon. Can the same be said of if The Party of God?

imad, did you see the coverage for cuba? i had to come accross it while waiting for news about lebanon on CNN. the second they heard castro is ill, they presented an agenda to "help cuba reach democracy" millions of dollars of course and another occupation, they even said cuba used to be part of the USA.. the plan for the "new cuba" had a budget for health reform.. even the commentator on CNN couldn't swallow this one.. he's like so if an american wants health insurance, he should go to cuba.

just another example of the arrogance.

his name wasn't even hasan, it was hassan...

blogagog, any one with brains knows that israel has planned this war a long time.
fine let's put it in simple terms for you:
israel destroys lebanon to get rid of HA because they feel threatened= lebanon keeps HA because we feel threatened, why because there is a country to our south that keeps bombing the hell out of us..
now i'm sure you're way too smart to argue, but HA are terrorists!! you're better than that, you can read and write can't you?

"According to Jewish law, during a time of battle and war, there is no such term as 'innocents' of the enemy."

If the IDF was acting according to this, then why are they announcing their strikes ahead of time to try to get civilians out of the line of fire?

:( If you truly believe that Israel planned to start a war by having Hezbollah kidnap some Israeli soldiers, then the outlook for Lebanon is truly bleak. The hatred of Israel must be very great indeed to be able to look past facts and blame Israel for starting this. Or to say Israel started this by occupying some Syrian farmland, as they have since 1967. Is Israel also to blame for Palestinians tunneling into Israel, killing some people and kidnapping a soldier? If your answer is yes, then this war will go on forever.

I have no doubt that Israel had plans for how to react to Iran's lapdogs attacking them. I also have no doubt that Iran and Hezbollah had a plan for attacking Israel. In fact, we are seeing both of those plans play out. But Israel didn't start it. Hezbollah did.

I'm amazed that you happily allow Iran and Syria to order Hezbollah to aid in the destruction of Lebanon, all the while decrying 'so called democracy' in your words. I pray that you come to understand the damage Iran's Hezbollah is doing to you, your country, and Israel.

ahuva, i seem to see the sirens on your side warning people, HA warn you people.
in our town, they warn then when people try to run away, they bomb their cars. i have family in baalbek who were scared to death yesterday but couldn't get out of there because of all "the accidents" that have been hitting anything that moves! so many families died in their cars, civil cars.

blogagog, i tried, seems you are beyond help.. and rest assured the hate will go on forever thanks to what you did now. this war has been planned since 2000 and there's alot of proof for that that's obviously beyond you.

Loubnani,

you said: This is bullshit ! where are your proofs [that Hizballah has been murdering Israeli citizens since Israel pulled out of southern Lebanon]?

No it is not b.s. And I shall offer proof for all the good it will do, because because it is YOU that dispense the b.s. in that you don't CARE that HA has done these things.

http://www.globalsecurity.org/military/world/para/hizballah.htm

"On Saturday morning, 7 October 2000 [less than five months after Israel pulled out of S.L.], an armed and frenzied mob, numbering in the hundreds, attacked the border fence from Lebanese territory, immediately followed by heavy shelling of Israeli border positions by Hizballah terrorist elements from Lebanese territory, using explosives, rocket-propelled grenades, Sager missiles and border shells. During the course of this aggression, three Israeli soldiers were kidnapped by a Hizballah unit which had entered Israeli territory for this purpose.

The organization operates against Israel in four main ways:

*Bringing terrorists and collaborators through the border crossings using foreign documents

*Setting up a terrorist organization inside Israel and in Judea, Samaria and the Gaza Strip

*Cross-border operations - smuggling weapons and terrorists

*Financial support for Palestinian organizations and groups.

Since 2003 it has been possible to see a trend of increasing cooperation between Hizballah in Lebanon and operational entities among the other Palestinian terrorist organizations, with the accent on Tanzim, Islamic Jihad, Hamas and the Popular Front. This cooperation is particularly evident between Hizballah and the Tanzim and in practice, in recent months Hizballah has served as a kind of "external command" for most of the Tanzim organizations in the territories.

Loubnani,

Incidentally, I noticed you did not deny that HA caused this catastrophe and that they plan to murder Lebanese politicians that oppose them after Israel leaves.

Mirvat, are you saying that the IDF isn't dropping leaflets telling people that they're planning on hitting their town, so they need to get out?

The IDF isn't trying to get people into their cars so they can play target-practice. No one wants civilians to get hurt. (Well, I heard that Hizbullah does, but I find it hard to believe that they're really that evil.) Even if you don't believe that the IDF doesn't want to harm civilians, surely you don't think they're stupid enough to actually WANT the PR nightmare that comes along with pictures of dead children?

No one wants more death. Israelis just want the missiles to stop and their soldiers back. They just want Hizbullah to leave them alone and think that this is the only way to get that to happen. I don't know if it's the right thing to do or not. I just know that there are people living in fear in bomb shelters on both sides of the border. There are people fleeing the fighting on both sides. There are unarmed civilians dying on both sides.

Who is saying that the IDF is intentionally targeting civilian cars anyway? Hizbullah?

Also.. did Hizbullah arm overnight? Surely they've also been planning for this for a long time.
