From A Position Of Strength

The current stand-off between Lebanon and Syria is escalating. Talk of severing relationships, economic woes to befall the Lebanese society, and instability is rampant. The situation however, is not as bleak as some might lead us to believe. We are in a position of strength, and can solve this conflict, or sail over it if need be. I will try to list the advantages that we have, and the alternatives to circumventing this childish embargo.

1. The first, and simplest thing is to reciprocate. 300'000 Syrian workers live and work in Lebanon. 300'000 Syrian families depend on those incomes for survival. Control the borders, make them pay taxes, fees, registration, etc. Deport them. They roam the country, free to work wherever they choose, tax-free. End this ride. Let's see what happens when, say, 1 million Syrians find themselves with no means of support.

Syria is interested in making as many enemies as possible. I'm with Gebran Tueni on this one: we should not let Syria claim the position of the aggressed.
