Prostitution Under Paint

Place: One of Beirut's street-side cafes.
Time: August 2005, 4 PM

On a table facing mine is seated three women and two men. The men's appearance and accents suggest they are of gulf arab nationality. The women's appearance, accents and mannerisms suggest they are Lebanese. It is also very evident what the entire meeting is for and about, as they are making no effort to hide their intentions.

I am certainly against the exploitation of anybody, but if lebanese women want to supplement their income, what is wrong with that? If it is of their own free will and they are getting adequately compensated, what is the big deal. The problem with the Eastern European women is that they do not have adequate legal recourse and are likely to be cheated or worse by their pimps. The expoloitation of foreign labor is not restricted to prostitution of course but is most prevalent in the domestic help area, where poor women from Ethiopia etc.. are sometimes literally treated as chattel with no legal intervention. that must be stopped, but if lebanese girls want to make a buck, and are getting adequately compensated, i am all for it.

I say live and let live. Government has no business in the private affairs of individuals. Btw, why do you think people from other regions call Beirut the Paris of the Middle East? And let's not even get into the subject of Lebanese Husbands acting as their wife’s pimps. This is a matter for the individual to decide what is best and whether we like it or not we should mind our own business. Do you really think those who wish to travel from Eastern Europe, whether college educated or not, don’t know what they are getting into. As far as Lebanese supplementing their income, sure that’s reasonable but I doubt very much most do not enjoy the promiscuity. To sum up, don’t waste your energy on something that has no measure for regulation.
